North Korea Freedom Week returns to Washington, D.C. this year with the 16th annual North Korea Freedom Week kicking off Sunday, April 28th with an international day of prayer and fasting for North Korea’s freedom and a wreath laying ceremony at the Korean War Memorial to be followed by a week of activities focused on promoting freedom for the people of North Korea people.  This year’s theme is: Listen to the North Korean Defectors: Then You Will Know the Truth and events throughout the week will feature the testimonies of North Korean defectors to focus attention on the four major topics listed below.

Total Lack of Protection for North Korean Women and Girls – Video, Report, and Transcripts

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a world where North Korean women are discriminated against, persecuted, punished, tortured, and even killed by their own government, the UN Commission on the Status of Women has yet to take up this issue. We were in New York for the annual meetings again this year and highlighted the suffering of North Korean women through expert and eyewitness testimony.

Please join us on March 15 in New York City for an event focusing on the plight of North Korean women. Two North Korean defectors will speak about their lives in and escape from North Korea and China. Our two witnesses lived in rural North Korea and China and will speak to the priority theme of the 63rd Session of the UN Comission on the Status of Women. In addition, Ann Buwalda of Jubilee Campaign and Greg Scarlatoiu of the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea will join us for a brief discussion on international human rights and policy recommendations.E

Joint Letter to UN Special Rapporteur: Defend the Free Speech of North Korean Defectors and Human Rights Activists in South Korea

NEW YORK (February 27, 2019) — In a joint letter addressed to the U.N. special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), the Committee for Human Rights in North Korea, and the North Korea Freedom Coalition urge Special Rapporteur Tomás Ojea Quintana to address the South Korean government’s efforts to silence North Korean defectors and other human rights activists, thereby abusing their hard-won rights to free speech and free assembly.

North Korea’s Secret Missile Operating Bases

Little is known about North Korea’s Sakkanmol missile operating base. Using commercial satellite technology, CSIS has identified 13 of the approximately 20 unidentified North Korean missile operating bases. Can North Korea truly denuclearize without acknowledging their secret missile operating bases? CSIS Korea Chair Victor Cha explains.

Why Get Involved?

An estimated 3 million North Koreans have perished under North Korea’s brutal dictatorial regime since the mid-1990s. Families continue to starve to death as the North Korean government withholds food rations to entire regions of the nation. The government arbitrarily detains, tortures, and executes its citizens, including children, in a large network of prison/labor camps. Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans have fled to China to survive, however they live in fear of forced repatriation, imprisonment, and possible execution after repatriation. Children whose parents have died or been separated from them wander the streets in search of food and protection. We must act now to bring relief!…
